Newark Liberty International Airport
Newark was founded by Puritans in 1666, and the Union area was settled
shortly thereafter. The name "Newark" is said to be a shortened
version of "New Work." The Battle of Connecticut Farms—one
of the last battles of the Revolutionary War—was fought in the Union
Township area in 1780. Though the Newark area saw a decline in the mid-to-late 20
th century, it's become significantly revitalized in recent years.
Today, about 56,000 people live in Union Township and about 280,000 live
in Newark. Union is perhaps best known for the Union Watersphere, which
at 212 feet is one of the tallest water towers in the world. Nearby Newark
is one of the busiest ports in the world, moving roughly $100 billion
in goods every year.
